In the city of Waterdeep rests a tavern called the Yawning Portal, named after the gaping pit in its common room. At the bottom of this crumbling shaft is a labyrinthine dungeon shunned by all but the most daring adventurers. Known as Undermountain, this dungeon is the domain of the mad wizard Halaster Blackcloak. Long has the Mad Mage dwelt in these forlorn depths, seeding his lair with monsters, traps, and mysteries—to what end is a constant source of speculation and concern.
Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage is an epic adventure/dungeon delve designed for up to six high level characters. It is the follow up to Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, and it takes adventurers deep into the largest, deepest dungeon known to exist in all the Forgotten Realms. Each of Undermountain's twenty-three levels is an adventure setting unto itself, with untold amounts of treasure, excitement, and danger to be found within. There is litterally too much going on in this dungeon to provide an adequate summary, so instead here's just a few teasers to entice your curiosity:
- Characters who survive through all 23 levels of the dungeon will gain enough experience to take them from level 5 all the way to 20! One dungeon with enough experience packed in to hit your level cap without going anywhere else has got to be worth a peak, right? But be warned: there is no rails that will hold you back from crossing from the easier areas (if they can be described as such) into the harder ones. Start heading too deep too quickly and you won't come back out!
- Are you a lover of all things magic? Hidden within this dungeon are some ancient symbols fuelled with all-powerful spells that have been lost to time. These forgotten elder runes can bolster a spellcaster's abilities in strange and amazing ways!
- Did you think exploring Waterdeep was fun? Well, now you can explore its seedier underdark cousin! Take a break from your forays into Undermountain by visiting Skullport, a grim, cutthroat outpost of civilization a mere couple miles below the surface of the City of Splendors. Few souls of the surface world have any clue how to reach this shadowy reflection of Waterdeep, making any talk of the Port of Shadow akin to a rumor, or a warning — which is just how its denizens like it.
- Confront the Mad Mage Halaster himself! The infamously insane ruler of Undermountain might be up to one of many different plots, each of which could change up randomly at any moment (they don't call him Mad for nothing). Depending on what he is up to at any given time, maybe you'll quarrel with him, maybe you won't. Who knows?! Nobody but he. Not even your DM is privy to Halaster's mad schemes! If you like a bit of random, unexpected behaviour in your big bad, you won't be more satisfied than you will be with this one.
If all of that sounds like a blast to you, then you're in the right place! Book your adventure today!
